Karyn A. Thwaites has been an associate with Zausmer, Kaufman, August, Caldwell & Tayler, P.C. since 2004. She
concentrates her practice in the areas of commercial litigation, general civil litigation,
securities litigation, environmental litigation and insurance defense.
Prior to her career with Zausmer, Kaufman, August, Caldwell & Tayler, P.C., Ms. Thwaites worked as an associate
at Morgan Lewis, LLP and Schulte Roth & Zabel, LLP in New York where her areas of practice included
complex commercial litigation, securities litigation, bankruptcy litigation and arbitration. She has
worked with clients in connection with Enron-related litigation, and with clients in relation to
investigations brought by the New York Attorney General concerning conflicts of interest between
research and banking at investment banks, as well as "late trading" and "market timing" activity by
mutual funds and hedge funds. She also has advised both individuals and corporate entities in the
defense of securities fraud claims.
Spending the first four years of her practice at two of the largest and most respected firms in the
nation has given Ms. Thwaites the experience to handle the largest and most complex legal matters.
She continues at Zausmer, Kaufman, August, Caldwell & Tayler, P.C. to represent large publicly traded companies
on a myriad of litigation matters including environmental contamination, real property disputes, and
liability defense. She also provides legal advice to corporations outside of the litigation context.
Ms. Thwaites graduated summa cum laude from Albion College in 1997, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
She received her juris doctor from the University of Michigan in 1999. At the University of Michigan Law School,
Ms. Thwaites served as Executive Editor of the Journal of Law Reform and participated in the clinical law program.
She is admitted to practice in all Michigan and New York state courts.
