Lucy R. Benham joined the law firm of Zausmer, Kaufman, August, Caldwell & Tayler, P.C. after previously being an owner of the Goldberg and Benham, PLC, law firm. She practices in the areas of business transactions, corporate law, real estate and construction law, and estate planning and probate. Ms. Benham is also an adjunct assistant professor at Walsh College teaching Legal Issues in Management in the MBA program.
Ms. Benham returned to college in 1980 after a brief career in the insurance industry. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1983 with a Bachelor in General Studies and from Wayne State University Law School in 1986 with a JD, cum laude. She earned an Associate in Risk Management Certificate from the Insurance Institute of America in 2002. She is currently a member of the State Bar of Michigan.
Ms. Benham is a Past President of National Association of Women Business Owners, Greater Detroit Chapter (NAWBO). She was a 1990-1991 recipient of the NAWBO Community Service Award and was the Public Policy Representative to the National Board for the 1994-1996 term. Ms. Benham attended the 1995 White House Conference on Small Business in Washington, DC as an elected Michigan Delegate, and served as co-chair of the 2001 National Annual Meeting that was held in Detroit, June 7 through June 10, 2001. In addition to her work for NAWBO, Ms. Benham was one of the founding members of the Majority Business Initiative, a non-profit organization ("MBI"). MBI consisted of women business leaders who worked together to promote the participation of women in the economic development of Michigan, particularly Metro Detroit. MBI, a consortium partner of Women Business Owners Corporation ("WBOC"), also provided certification services for women owned and controlled businesses. Ms. Benham was named among Detroit's 100 most influential women in the March 31, 1997 edition of Crain's Detroit Business and was selected as one of the 1999 Ten Women Business Owners of Distinction by NAWBO.
Ms. Benham is actively involved in the community. She was a founding member of the Board of Directors of Forgotten Harvest, Inc., a Michigan nonprofit corporation run by a volunteer Board of Directors, organized to transfer viable food from restaurants and grocery stores to soup kitchens. In addition, Ms. Benham previously served on the Detroit Medical Centers Ad Hoc Minority Purchasing Advisory Council and on the Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts of Metro Detroit from 2002 to 2004.
Ms. Benham was raised in Michigan and currently lives in Bloomfield Township with her daughter, Elisabeth Rose.
